Monday night, thieves broke into three outbuildings at the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society. Locks were cut off the sheds and door handles were broken by the thieves to gain entry. "It seems like they came here ready to break in and had the tools to make it happen," said Brad Shear, Executive Director. The sheds held animal care supplies, including those kept in reserve for disaster relief services. It appears the thieves were seeking the redeemable bottles and cans that the Society collects and redeems as a fundraiser to support their activities helping homeless animals. "It appears they took about $500 worth of bottles and cans," Shear said. "That buys a lot of dog and cat food, vaccines and medication for the animals in our care. These are tough times and I'm not sure how we will make up this loss." In addition to the loss of the bottles and cans, the Society will have to repair the damaged sheds and is looking into getting a video surveillance system, another costly expense. The theft was reported to the Menands Police Department and they are investigating. The perpetrator(s) would have a large number of recyclable bottles and cans in large, clear plastic bags, pre-sorted by beverage brand.
